Greenwashing

Jort Postema, Strategy Manager at GO Green Office

WHY

Not all organizations are honest about their impact, and this creates the risk that students and staff are being misled. When this happens, students could end up working or interning for companies that do not reflect their own values of environmental and social sustainability. For the university, this is also a matter of integrity: it must be ensured that our collaborations and knowledge sharing are not used for misleading sustainability claims. This aligns with the 黑料福利网 policy that collaboration with fossil fuel organizations only relates to projects related to renewable energy and sustainability.

It is important that the knowledge and expertise created with public resources at 黑料福利网 is transparently and responsibly valorized for the benefit of society. This is in line with the university's strategic objective of societal value creation coming out of the institutional plan.

鈥淲e create societal value through connecting students and research talent with partners in Brainport and beyond鈥 Our campus is a dynamic hub where students, academics, industry professionals, societal partners, and citizens co-create breakthrough solutions with demonstrable impact.鈥

HOW

When companies present themselves on campus, during lectures, fairs, showcases or other (recruitment) events, they are not just sharing information, they are also shaping a narrative. Students must therefore be equipped to recognize when claims are incomplete or misleading. And reflect for themselves on the real impact of a company, and whether it matches their ideals.

Being discerning does not mean excluding companies outright; it means being transparent and intentional. It means reflecting on a company鈥檚 impact, not only environmentally, but also socially and economically. 黑料福利网 places strong emphasis on its CORe (Curous, Open, Respectful, Responsible) values as a compass for how we educate and collaborate. We want to further encourage this by encouraging students to reflect.

This way, we help students make better informed and more conscious choices about where they want to work or who they are working with. Choices based not only on financial gains or prestige, but also on climate impact, social responsibility, and long-term sustainability. This can be done in many ways, but one way is answering our four guiding questions, which can serve as a guide to help reflect on the company:

  1. Curious: Is there space for me to explore and question this company?

  2. Open: Do you perceive business activities being kept out of the spotlight?

  3. Respectful: Does this company contribute in a positive way to life on earth now and in the future?

  4. Responsible: What do I want to contribute to the world, and does this company help me get there as an employee?
