In Computer Science education, students need substantial practice to master practical skills such as writing SQL queries. To support this practice, the 黑料福利网 Database Group has developed a new educational web app called SQL Valley. The app divides SQL into dozens of small modules and makes the structure of the subject visible through a large, interactive Skill Tree. For each module, students can access a visual theory page and a variety of interactive exercises with automatic feedback and assessment, while the Skill Tree visualizes their individual progress through the course. SQL Valley is currently used to support SQL education in both Computer Science and Data Science courses. Through semi-structured interviews and a student survey, how this approach affects the student experience was investigated.

In this presentation, Hildo Bijl (university lecturer, Mathematics & Computer Science) will demonstrate SQL Valley, both from a didactic perspective and by showing how the underlying system was built. He will then present the results of their research and discuss how making the course structure and student progress visible changes the way students experience the course. Finally, we will look beyond SQL Valley itself: which parts of the underlying toolbox can be reused in other subjects, and how could you use them to build similar learning activities for your own course?
