Topic: Hydrogen and The Joule-Thomson Effect

Introduction
The Joule-Thomson effect is a fascinating example of the application of thermodynamics to real world processes, with the standard example of reducing the pressure of a fluid across a valve in a process called throttling. In many cases throttling a gas will result in significant temperature reduction. In the general case, a fluid's temperature may increase, decrease or remain unchanged, depending on the substance and the conditions. This leads to the erroneous view that some fluids behave 'strangely', increasing in temperature upon depressurization, a good example being hydrogen. In this talk we will examine the fundamentals behind the Joule-Thomson effect, and rationalize the observed behaviour of hydrogen compared with other fluids.

About the speaker

Brian Greenhalgh is a specialist in computational thermodynamics. He previously worked for NOVA Chemicals (now Borouge Int'l) in Calgary, ExxonMobil in Houston and Shell in Amsterdam. He has 16 years of experience in the application of thermodynamics to industrial processes, including chemicals, polymers and oil & gas. He also recently published his first text, An Introduction to Computational Thermodynamics: Phase Equilibrium and Equations of State (Springer 2026).
