Do you recognize this – students start studying only in the final weeks of a course? Voluntary formative quizzes, including quizzes that offer bonus points, mainly attract students who are already motivated, while those who struggle with engagement often remain disengaged. Interim exams, intended to stimulate earlier study, can have unintended effects: students who perform poorly early in the course may become demotivated and find it difficult to recover.

To address this dilemma, a pilot was set up in a large Mechanical Engineering course using digital progress tests. Progress tests combine formative assessment with small structural requirements that encourage continuous engagement without creating high-stakes pressure. The pilot not only resulted in a substantial increase in the course pass rate, but also in a reduction of workload as perceived by students.

Following these results, progress tests were adopted in several other courses within the bachelor program. In this session, Hans Kuerten (full professor, Mechanical Engineering) and Lambèrt van Breemen (associate professor, Mechanical Engineering) will be joined by Gerard Van De Watering in sharing the key design principles, lessons learned, and practical considerations for implementing progress tests in your own course.
