Design and the Social Construction of AI

Abstract

As futures are increasingly foreclosed by dominant tech narratives of power, speed, efficiency, and consumption, it becomes crucial to question the role of design in constructing and telling these stories. This lecture addresses strategies and techniques used in constructing future imaginaries of AI through design and explores how critical design practice can challenge, problematize, and reveal these dominant narratives while proposing alternatives. The talk delves into the social construction of AI, examining the mainstream narratives, ideas, assumptions, and biases reciprocated by designers in framing AI. Whether through stock imagery, science fiction, documentaries, demonstrations, trade shows, adverts, or viral videos, the design vernacular around AI often secures certain imaginaries, typically related to maintaining power.

Conversely, critical practitioners have been developing tools and techniques to challenge these tendencies, proposing feminist, queer, sustainable, and inclusive approaches to framing and developing AI. My research explores how design can be used by practitioners to both reciprocate and trouble mainstream assumptions about the future of AI.

About the speaker

Tobias Revell is an artist, designer, researcher and educator from London specialising in futures and technology through critical practice. He is Design Futures Lead at where he leads the Foresight team in delivering large-scale strategic futures and sustainability projects for internal and external clients and developing futures literacy across the firm. He specialises in the use of design approaches to deepen engagement, enhance the quality of outcomes and question underlying assumptions in tackling complex problems.
