When AI becomes a scientific instrument

Abstract

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in scientific practice. In many domains, machine-learned models transform raw data, such as images or time series, into estimates of scientifically meaningful quantities. In doing so they function as learned measurement instruments and must be evaluated accordingly. I will discuss what demands this perspective places on validation and reliability of machine-learned models.

Indr臈 沤liobait臈 is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, where she leads an interdisciplinary  research group in data science. Her research program focuses on computational approaches for understanding change processes in nature and society.
