The broad availability of generative AI tools disrupts challenge-based learning: Tasks students previously spend substantial time on such as finding and understanding new material, writing code, or producing a report are outsourced by students to AI. This in turn challenges what actual learning should take place in a CBL course and how to design activities and feedback to help students navigate the inevitable use and pitfalls of AI tools. At the same time, their availability also opens up opportunities to address gaps in CBL that educators usually cannot address.

This talk presents several ideas on guided AI usage that were piloted in a 1st year CBL course as part of the SAIL DRIVE project. From various observations on which activities and interventions were effective or not as well as new insights on AI usage by students, we derive several lessons learned on supporting CBL with AI in interesting ways.

This lunch session will be led by Dirk Fahland, associate professor at the Mathematics & Computer Science department, and is open to teachers and professional staff.
