FreeHow can challenge-based learning (CBL) increase the learning rate of difficult theoretical principles?
In this lunch roundtable, Sveta Zinger (associate professor) and Jesper Pilmeyer (PhD researcher) of the Electrical Engineering department introduce a simulated environment to help students learn complex medical imaging techniques, and solve real-life problems.
Traditional theory-based questions may limit the capacity of acquiring knowledge, and do not represent real-life situations which may limit the skills to practically implement it. They discuss how education may be improved when CBL or other realistic hands-on assignments are designed.
For example, assessments on simulation suggest benefits such as students enjoying the learning process more, and the learning rate being boosted. Students are seen to value its real-life and critical thinking aspects. In addition to increasing the learning rate of difficult theoretical principles, these real-life types of exercises engage students more deeply in the course, and acquaint them with practical applications in multidisciplinary settings.
During the session, they also establish recommendations for other teachers who would like to develop and integrate CBL-based assignments in their course or program.
