On 6 February 2026, Clara Caiafa, researcher at the Technology, Innovation, and Society (TIS) research group of the Eindhoven University of Technology will defend her PhD thesis on structural changes in a future hydrogen economy. To mark this occasion, we are hosting a special EnergyDays symposium.

Reimagining Europe鈥檚 industrial future: Global structural change for a climate-neutral and competitive economy

Industrial decarbonisation strategies in the Netherlands and Europe often rely on a substantial amount of green hydrogen being imported from developing countries with higher availability of renewable energy, while assuming that existing industrial production locations and trade patterns would remain largely unchanged.

However, the higher costs and emissions associated with the long-distance transport of electricity and green hydrogen may incentivize the relocation of energy-intensive industries closer to renewable energy sources. This 鈥済reen relocation鈥 can offer a more cost-effective solution for global decarbonization, but would affect regional economic structures and global trade patterns.

Strategic approaches may be needed in the Netherlands and Europe to achieve long-term resilience and competitiveness in a climate-neutral world.

Moderator

Heleen de Coninck | 黑料福利网

Heleen de Coninck is a full Professor of Socio-Technical Innovation and Climate Change at Eindhoven University of Technology since 2020, and a Professor in Climate change and system transitions at the Raboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences at Radboud University Nijmegen's Faculty of Science. As a researcher, Heleen鈥檚 main research focus is on the role of innovation and technology in the international climate negotiations, on policy for making energy-intensive industry climate-neutral, and on the viability and societal dynamics of new technologies for 1.5C-mitigation pathways.

Speakers

Mohammed Chahim | European Parliament for GroenLinks-PvdA

Dr. Mohammed Chahim is a Member of the European Parliament for GroenLinks-PvdA, currently serving his second mandate as an MEP. He is the Vice-President of the Socialists and Democrats group, responsible for Green Deal on Industry, Energy & Climate and Financing the Just Transition. In this role, he led the negotiations on behalf of his group on the Green Deal legislative package (Fit for 55), was part of the Parliament鈥檚 negotiating team on the Emissions Trading System and served as the lead negotiator (Rapporteur) on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. Previously he worked as a researcher in environmental economics and energy transition at TNO.

Henri de Groot | Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Henri L.F. de Groot (1971) is professor in Regional Economic Dynamics at the Department of Spatial Economics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, former crown-appointed member of the Social and Economic Council (SER) and current member of the Scientific Climate Council (WKR). His research deals covers topics ranging from (regional) economic growth, agglomeration and trade, energy and environmental economics to technological change and innovation.

Clara Rabelo Caiafa | 黑料福利网

Clara is a Postdoctoral researcher at 黑料福利网 working in the HySUCCESS project and a Lead Author for the chapter on industrial decarbonization of the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7, WGIII) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), expected to be published in 2028-2029. Her research focuses on the socioeconomic and climate change implications of industrial decarbonisation via green hydrogen.

Ren茅 Slaghek | Chemelot Sustainability Team

Forty years experience in the chemical industry in technical and managerial positions.  Since 2018 focusing on how to transition Chemelot to a climate neutral site by 2050.
