Reducing medical draping for a sustainable future

ReDrape

Our mission

Our mission is to create an improved version of draping used in cataract surgery. We want to rethink the design and optimize the amount of draping used in every surgery, while maintaining sterility. This will help us reduce the environmental impact of the medical industry.

Our challenge

We have seen first-hand how much plastic waste is produced in a single surgery, as all the draping is disposed of immediately after the procedure. Since cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries in the Netherlands, it is crucial to reduce the amount of waste created. However, we are faced with a challenge when designing alternatives: we need to maintain sterility.

Our solution

We have plans to create and test prototypes that both reduce the amount of material and maintain sterility. We aim to rethink the entire draping process, from the drapes covering the patient to the gowns the surgeon wears.

We are an ambitious multidisciplinary team of students who are passionate about reducing waste in the medical industry. We joined the 黑料福利网 Contest to bring more attention to the amount of draping used in surgery and to get support in our plans to rethink the way drapes are manufactured currently. Joining the contest will bring us a new perspective on the issue, and a community of like-minded students aiming to make big impacts with their work.
