Definitions

This alphabetically ordered list with definitions serves as a reference for both official and project-specific language used throughout the project. It includes:

  • Official terms, accompanied by the source or definition adopted within the context of this project. The references used can be found in the literature overview.
  • Frequently used terms that may be new or unfamiliar to some readers. These are not necessarily official but are important for understanding the project content.

By providing explanations, this list aims to ensure clarity and consistency in interpretation for all readers.

Role descriptions

In the University of the Future, there are several new roles. This is why we give an overview of the key roles and their definitions. These are role descriptions, and not per se people. One person can have multiple roles at certain moments in time.

Type of learner

Co-learner

Learners within the university are all actors connected to the ecosystem. Every learner facilitates their own and others鈥 learning.

Junior Learner

A learner who has recently completed secondary education, is at the beginning of their academic journey, and/or has limited professional or life experience.

Type of learner

Senior Learner

A learner with substantial professional or life experience who returns to the university as part of their lifelong learning journey.

Guidance role

Learning facilitator

A broad role that includes supporting, guiding, and validating individual development as well as team development. These roles ensure seamless knowledge exchange and dialogue among learners to achieve goals in a learner-centered environment. It can encompass roles such as coach, expert, and boundary spanner.

Travel companion

A university staff member who supports learners in navigating institutional processes and assembling a personalized curriculum. The travel companion ensures the learning process is safeguarded and guided effectively by leading the guidance committee.

Coach

A university staff member who offers individual and team support to learners, helping them define and achieve personal goals, develop critical skills, reflect on challenges, and unlock their potential, supporting the development of emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.

Expert

An expert on a certain topic or methodology, providing expert feedback to the learner(s). An expert often combines this with the role of researcher.

Validator

An expert who provides feedback and/or verifies learner鈥檚 understanding and progression towards the development of specific competencies (i.e., knowledge, skills, attitudes).

Community role

Boundary spanner

Someone who facilitates collaboration within and between learning communities/thematic hubs and external professionals or organizations. They bridge gaps between disciplines and connect the university to the outside world, enabling the flow of ideas, resources, and opportunities across boundaries to enrich learning and innovation.

Community role

Actor

Individuals or representatives of groups or institutes involved in one or multiple curriculum layers, such as learners, coaches, experts, professionals, policymakers, and citizens. The term 鈥渁ctor鈥 instead of 鈥渟takeholder鈥 is used because actors are more active.
