Abstract
This research by design project is aimed at translating the plane-tree description for architecture and healing environment to spatial and architectural components, interventions, strategies and typologies. Planetree is a guideline for improving operational and organizational aspects to put patients care at the center.
GGZ Eindhoven, founded in 1918, is a psychiatric institute in the Eindhoven region, the Netherlands. In 2014 GGzE received the Planetree certificate, becoming the first mental health institute both in Europe and the Netherlands to receive this award. The organization updated its planetree certificate from bronze in 2014 to a gold certificate in 2018. Planetree is a certification originated in the U.S. focused on making a patient-centered program, partnering with the patients and their families, to identify and satisfy the full range of their needs and preferences.
This research by design project has focused on designing a toolbox consisting of architectural components following the Planetree principles. The toolbox consists out of multiple categories where architectural components are arranged based on relevant scales of intervention.
The toolbox is developed in stages. The first stage is to make a clear categorization for the architectural components based on the Planetree criteria for a healing environment. To make this categorization, the Planetree criteria handbook and the criteria published by the Planetree Interna-tional Organization has be analyzed using literature studies. Then a spatial quality analysis was executed, using studies, to determine the parameters for the architectural components. Next, architectural projects have been explored to find relevant examples for each architectural design elements.
After doing a comparative analysis of the findings from the literature studies and the case studies, a set of information will be synthesized. This set of information has been used to design the toolbox and its architectural components.
The main research question for this design project is, how to provide everyone involved in the real estate of GGzE and other psychiatric institutes, with architectural tools that help to design, construct and develop buildings according to the Planetree targets for creating truly healing environments?
The project will deliver the following:
- Clear categorization of Planetree criteria for archi-tectural components
- Analysis of the categories and criteria to determine suited architectural components and factors
- Analysis of several examples of architectural 鈥渢oolboxes鈥
- Design of architectural components
- Design of an Architectural toolbox according to Planetree criteria
