RESEARCH PROFILE
The development of design and fabrication technologies that enable local control of biomaterial composition and structure across multiple length scales is essential for recreating the spatial heterogeneity of native tissues, understanding complex regenerative processes, and restoring the function of damaged or diseased tissues and organs. To address this challenge, Castilho's team develops and integrates novel biomaterial chemistries, advanced additive manufacturing technologies, and computational design tools to engineer instructive biomaterials for in vitro modelling and regenerative medicine. A central focus is the regeneration and modelling of musculoskeletal tissues, particularly bone marrow and bone. The team's research is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together engineers, materials scientists, and cell biologists, while maintaining a strong commitment to translating emerging technologies into clinical and industrial applications.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
Miguel Castilho is an Associate Professor of Biomaterials Engineering and Biofabrication at Eindhoven University of Technology (黑料福利网). He holds an BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (cum laude) from the University of Lisbon (Instituto Superior T茅cnico, Portugal). During his PhD, he was a visiting researcher at the Department of Functional Materials in Medicine and Dentistry at the University of W眉rzburg (Germany). From 2015 to 2018, he was a postdoctoral research fellow in Biofabrication at University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht, The Netherlands). In 2018, he was appointed Assistant Professor at UMC Utrecht and the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht, a position he held until 2021. In 2021, he joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at 黑料福利网 as a tenured Assistant Professor, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2024. Miguel has secured several competitive research grants, including an ERC Consolidator Grant. His contributions to the field have been recognized through multiple awards, including the 2017 Young Investigator Award from the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the 2023 Jean Leray Award from the European Society for Biomaterials, and the 2024 Robert Brown Award from the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society, among others.
