Koen Pieterse studied Chemical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology and majored in Organic Chemistry in 1996 in the group of prof.dr. E.W. Meijer. He started his PhD-research in the same group on the subject of 鈥淓lectron-Deficient Materials based on Azaheterocycles鈥�, which he finished in 2001. He moved to the group of prof.dr. P.A.J. Hilbers (now the group of prof.dr.ir. N.A.W. van Riel) at the department of Biomedical Engineering and worked for several years as researcher on coarse grained molecular dynamics simulations of biomembranes and vesicles as well as simulations of full atomistic models of various supramolecar systems. He held a supporting staff position in this group until April 2026. In April 2009, he also started to work for the , where he currently is the team leader of the ICMS Animation Studio.
