RESEARCH PROFILE

As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Design, Dey is working on the human factors of Intelligent Transportation Systems and Future/ Smart Mobility. He studies how people understand, trust, communicate with, and remain safe around intelligent mobility systems, with the goal of making automated transportation more human-centered, socially competent, and accountable. His research interests lie in the fields of ubiquitous computing, multimodal interaction, natural user interfaces, and specifically, traffic safety, automotive user interfaces, and urban tech.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Debargha (Dave) Dey obtained his master's degree in Computer Science at Vanderbilt University in the United States, and worked as a Software Engineer before gradually transitioning into the fields of User Experience, User-Centred Design, Human-Computer Interaction, and Human Factors, and returning to academia. He earned his PDEng (Professional Doctorate in Engineering) degree in User-System Interaction from the Eindhoven University of Technology in 2017.

As a part of the his PhD research focused on understanding the nature of the interaction between vehicles and other road users in the present scenario of human-driven vehicles of today, and investigating how these interactions can be facilitated or augmented for autonomous vehicles of tomorrow. He received a PhD cum laude from the Department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology in 2020. You can read his dissertation .

Following his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Eindhoven University of Technology with Prof. Dr. Marieke Martens, and then at Cornell Tech with , where he worked on modeling cross-cultural behaviors in traffic for the development of autonomous vehicles.

Dey is actively involved in the ACM SIGCHI and AutomotiveUI communities and served in the organizing committees of CHI, MobileHCI, AutomotiveUI, CHIWORK, and CHI NL, as well as a member of the AutomotiveUI steering committee.
