Novel treatment strategies for an active and aging population 聽
Human cells produce, maintain, and adapt musculoskeletal tissues such as bone, tendons, and cartilage in response to their biophysical environment, both in health and disease. In our ever-aging population, orthopaedic injuries and degenerative diseases have become more prevalent, with an increasing socioeconomic burden. Current treatment methods with purely synthetic devices, such as joint prostheses, offer limited functionality restoration and durability, especially in view of the increasing longevity and high level of activity of modern-day humans. The Orthopaedic Biomechanics (OPB) research group combines engineering and biology to expand our understanding of musculoskeletal tissues and to develop novel regenerative and restorative (implant-based) treatment strategies. We use and integrate both experimental and computational research approaches, and apply these to various musculoskeletal tissues, including articular cartilage, intervertebral disc, and bone. As our research aims to make a positive impact on existing treatment strategies, we work closely with clinical and industrial partners in the Netherlands and abroad.
