The Netherlands aims to have a circular economy by 2050. An economy in which as many sustainable renewable raw materials as possible are used, products and raw materials are reused, and waste does not exist. Intermediate targets have been set for the construction sector for 2030:
1) 0.4 Mton CO2 reduction
2) 60% nitrogen reduction
3) 75% health gain.
Prefab modular construction is an essential element for realizing circularity in the construction sector. Modularity enables the construction of adaptable and reversible structures that adjust to changing demand and can make the construction process much more efficient. However, the modular construction sector is currently far from utilizing its full potential for circularity.
In this project, ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø is collaborating with industry partners on the development of a digitally integrated circular supply chain for prefab modular construction and an efficient infrastructure for data sharing. This research project aims to accelerate the transition via a digitally integrated circular supply chain for prefabricated modular construction, supported by a circular asset management system (CAMS). Such an integrated digital system, particularly for off-site logistics operations in construction, is currently lacking in both scientific literature and practice. The roadmap will provide clear direction for the transition from a linear chain to a digitally integrated and highly coordinated circular supply chain, with an emphasis on mechanisms to create added value for the entire process.
