The shift to renewable energy is moving fast, but it also creates new problems. Solar and wind do not always produce energy when we need it. This can lead to grid pressure, price swings, and uncertainty for local initiatives. SmartCORE addresses this by helping energy communities move beyond generating power and start planning, sharing, and steering energy in a smarter collective way.

Bringing demand and supply closer together
SmartCORE develops and tests ways to bring demand and supply closer together. This includes sharing energy within a neighborhood, matching consumption to moments with plenty of renewable generation, and supporting the grid with services that help keep the system balanced and reduce local congestion. This work is tested through pilots in Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, so the solutions can fit different local contexts and rules.

Make the move toward more renewable energy easier
The research focuses on strengthening six existing energy communities and making their experience usable for six new communities. In this way, SmartCORE aims to make the move toward more renewable energy easier for residents, cooperatives, and other local partners.

The project is led by Anna Wieczorek and has a total budget of about 10.5 million euros through Interreg North West Europe.
