SuGeST - Smart Buildings, Smart Future
Five key activities are performed in a total of five work packages. First, an appropriate system architecture for smart buildings is established based on the latest insights from recent research projects, and collaboration takes place with innovative commercial partners. Second, a federated data model and semantic middleware are developed according to FAIR data principles and international data standards. Third, the federated data model is deployed as a proof-of-concept at two living labs, TU Delft The Green Village and the TU Eindhoven Campus, to connect with various data sources, translate and link the (meta)data. The fourth package consists of validating the semantic middleware, applying various use cases, including the model-predictive control of AIMZ. Finally, the project results are converted into practical guidelines that can be reused by others, and the knowledge is shared via articles and events.

Buildings can become increasingly smart and data-driven; however, currently 90% of available IoT and sensor data remains unused. Fragmentation, a lack of interoperability, and the absence of standardized data exchange constitute significant obstacles for building owners. This hinders affordable and scalable solutions for healthier buildings with extended lifespans.
The goal of the project is to: (1) advance standards and guidelines for smart buildings: vendor-independent, scalable, affordable, data-secure, and transferable, and (2) enable improved model-predictive control (MPC) and control logic in GACS. This contributes to MMIP (Building Environment Lifespan Extension) and promotes data ownership by the building owner.
The project delivers two concrete results: (1) a data standard for how the Dutch built environment can be structured and made accessible, compatible with international standards to enable holistic and integrated services, and (2) a proof-of-concept of the independent data layer, a federated data model, and semantic middleware.
