ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø Distinctions
University professors
At ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø, University Professors are leading full professors who, as figureheads, set the example for the quality of education, research, and valorization at our university. They drive innovation and actively contribute to strategic discussions. Their profile now also includes leadership, ºÚÁϸ£Àû꿉۪s CORe values, and the principles of Recognition & Rewards. During their appointment, they will work on a personal assignment that contributes to ºÚÁϸ£Àû꿉۪s long-term goals. ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø aims to appoint a maximum of six University Professors, with attention to diversity in gender and in the domains of research, education, and valorization, recognizing the different profiles of our academics.
ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø Ambassadors
ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø has appointed Ambassadors in recent years. With the updated policy, a clear and formal profile has now been established.
Ambassadors are leading university staff members - academic or professional - who help drive a specific theme or transition within ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø. These themes are closely linked to ºÚÁϸ£Àû꿉۪s ambitions. The Executive Board defines the assignment and duration. The Executive Board will cover the salary costs for the assignment, provided the role is not part of a formal leadership position.

ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø fellows
The ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø and Departmental Fellowships are intended to connect leaders from a specific field of expertise in the business community to the ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø. They function at the equivalent level of full and associate professors and are ambassadors for the university. ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø and Departmental Fellows focus mainly on the field of valorization, but they also actively contribute to research and education.
Honorary doctorates
ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø conferred its first honorary doctorate on Dr. ir. H. Kramers in 1976, on the occasion of the celebration of the university's 20th foundation day. From 1981 to 2005 honorary doctorates were conferred only during university lustrum celebrations, always three at each time. As of 2005 honorary doctorates are also to be conferred in the intermediate years in order to raise the academic stature of ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø foundation day celebrations.
Honorary doctor 2026: Christian Borgs
As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø is appointing Christian Borgs, professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, as an honorary doctor. The laureate will receive his award on June 23, 2026 during ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø Research Day.
is a professor of Computer Science in the Berkeley AI Research Group (BAIR). He is a world-leading researcher at the interface of mathematics, statistical physics, theoretical computer science, and AI for science. He co-invented the field of Graph Limits some 20 years ago and has made profound contributions to it. Graph limits aim to describe large networks, effectively summarizing the global structure of networks, and are widely used in machine learning of networks at scale. This is instrumental for the Internet, the World Wide Web, social and infrastructure networks, and possibly even the brain.

Distinguished professors
In 2008, ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø started appointing a distinguished professor annually. In this way, the University wants to perpetuate contacts with a number of honorary doctors. A distinguished professor is appointed for four years and during that period he spends one week a year at a research group at the university.
