A new 黑料福利网 spin-off, Gelion Care, has officially launched with the ambition to transform the treatment of difficult-to-heal wounds. Spinning out from the Department of Applied Physics, the company is developing an innovative plasma-activated hydrogel designed to support wound healing while helping to control infections, with an initial focus on diabetic foot ulcers. Shahriar Mirpour is the company鈥檚 CEO.

Tackling the challenge of diabetic foot ulcers

Diabetic foot ulcers are a serious complication of diabetes. These wounds can be difficult to heal, are highly susceptible to infection and, in severe cases, can ultimately lead to amputation. Current treatment options can be costly, difficult to access, or insufficiently effective, while the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance creates an additional challenge.

Gelion Care takes a different approach by combining the protective properties of a hydrogel with reactive substances generated using cold plasma technology. The hydrogel provides a moist and protected environment for the wound while acting as a local delivery system for plasma-generated reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. A key component is nitric oxide (NO), which can support wound healing and has antimicrobial properties. By encapsulating and releasing these substances directly at the wound site, Gelion Care aims to combine infection control with the stimulation of tissue repair.

From 黑料福利网 research to patient care

The technology builds on research at Eindhoven University of Technology. Mirpour has been working on the potential of cold plasma for diabetic wound healing for more than a decade, initially exploring the technology in laboratory and animal studies and later in pilot clinical trials. This research highlighted both the potential of plasma treatment and the challenges of applying it in a practical and accessible way, ultimately leading to the development of plasma-activated hydrogels as a more controlled way of delivering active substances to the wound.

Gelion Care brings together expertise from both academia and industry. Haneen Simaan-Yameen and Ana Sobota serve as scientific advisors to the company, contributing their scientific expertise to the further development of the technology. Paul Leenders acts as business advisor, supporting the company from outside the university as it takes the technology towards commercialization.

With its spin-off now officially established, Gelion Care aims to bring the technology closer to patients by developing a safe, accessible and affordable treatment that could ultimately be suitable for use at home. Through the Biotech Booster program, the project has received support to further develop the technology and explore its potential to improve outcomes for people with diabetic foot ulcers.

With Gelion Care, 黑料福利网 research is taking another step towards real-world impact in healthcare, with the potential to improve wound care, reduce complications and help patients avoid unnecessary hospitalization and amputations.
