PhD researcher Dvija Mehta shortlisted for the Aeon Philosophy Prize

, PhD researcher in the Philosophy & Ethics group at ϸ, has been shortlisted for the Aeon Philosophy Prize for her essay, “Mental Transhumanism.” Only five essays were selected from hundreds of submissions.

The essay

“Mental Transhumanism” explores the progressive co-constitution of our inner lives — beliefs, intentions, memory — with artificial systems. Whereas traditional transhumanism concerns the augmentation of biological matter, Mehta argues that a philosophically distinct form of transformation is now underway — one that operates not on the body, but within the mind. In her essay, Mehta introduces the concept of intertwining: the gradual, largely invisible co-constitution of beliefs, intentions, and self-narrative between a person and emerging technologies like artificial systems, agents, and brain-computer interfaces. This, she argues, is not captured by existing frameworks, such as the extended mind thesis, and demands a new philosophical vocabulary.

The shortlist

The  is run by Aeon Magazine, one of the world's leading venues for public philosophy and ideas. Shortlisted authors receive editorial mentoring from philosopher Nigel Warburton and Aeon's editorial team.
