Projects ARISE and R-TRACS receive NWO funding for space technology research

ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø takes part in NWO KIC call focused on space technology with two projects.

Four space technology research projects have been awarded more than €5.3 million in funding by NWO. A further  â‚¬1.5 million will be co-funded by companies and other organizations. ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø researchers Mark Bentum, Gabriele Federico, Stefania Monni, Faruk Uysal, Jasmina Lazendic – Galloway, Tom Oomen and Gert Witvoet are involved in two of the KIC projects. The KIC program supports research into robust, secure and strategically deployable space technologies. This contributes to maintaining and strengthening the Netherlands’ technological and scientific capacity within the space sector.

Project ARISE

ARISE – Adaptive and Resilient ISR from SpaceE is one of the projects that receives funding. The project is led by Mark Bentum, Professor in the Electromagnetics group at the Department of Electrical Engineering. He is joined by Assistant Professor Gabriele Federico, parttime Professor Stefania Monni and researchers Faruk Uysal and Jasmina Lazendic – Galloway from the same research group. This project concentrates on technologies for smarter and more resilient satellite systems for Intelligence Surveillance and Recognition (ISR). The aim is to develop satellite systems that can operate reliably under challenging conditions.

Within this project, ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø works together with researchers from TU Delft, University of Amsterdam and ASTRON on new antenna technologies, self-aware satellites, and alternatives to GPS. The project also addresses the underlying juridical framework. In this way, the project contributes to a safe and resilient space infrastructure that is vital for modern society and the economy.

Partners that contribute to this project are TNO, AAC Clyde Space, Altum RF, HE Space Operations, ISIS – Innovative Solutions In Space, Ministry of Defense, Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre, S&T Netherlands and The Antenna Company.

Project R-TRACS

ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø also joins in the project R-TRACS: Robust TRacking and Acquisition for optical Communication in Space. Tom Oomen, Professor in the Control Systems Technology section at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is a co-applicant for this project. He is joined by Associate Professor Gert Witvoet from the same research section. R-TRACS is led by University of Twente and it focuses on free-space optical (FSO) communication.

The speed, security, and adaptability of space-based communication systems can be significantly enhanced using FSO communication. This project aims to advance FSO as a technology for robust, resilient and strategically deployable infrastructure. Moreover, it aims to strengthen the Dutch scientific and technological capacity and competitiveness in space infrastructure. It does so by developing next-generation space-based mechatronic architectures, algorithms for fast acquisition and higher data transfers and robustification of the optical links. Experimental validation and demonstration of the results are an integral part of the project.
