Design and quantum science join forces to make quantum computing accessible

The Department of Applied Physics & Science Education, together with the Center for Quantum Materials and Technology Eindhoven (QT/e), has launched a new collaboration with the Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) to make quantum computing more accessible to a broader audience.

The initiative brings together Design Academy Eindhoven (), the Center for Quantum Materials and Technology Eindhoven (QT/e), the Quantum Talent and Learning Center Eindhoven (), and exhibition company  to explore new ways of communicating complex quantum physics concepts to society.

Connecting cutting-edge quantum research with design, to translate complex quantum physics principles into engaging, tangible and understandable experiences. At the center of the initiative is , where, over the past six months, 19 bachelor students worked closely with researchers from QT/e and the Talent and Learning Center, exploring how design can help make abstract scientific concepts more accessible and meaningful for wider audiences.

The Do Make studio project was led by studio leader , with support from , and challenged students to explore how scientific knowledge can be communicated beyond traditional academic contexts. Rather than focusing solely on scientific explanation, students investigated how design, materiality, and interaction can create new ways for audiences to engage with complex research topics.

The collaboration builds on ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø quantum research activities led by Prof. Servaas Kokkelmans, aimed at developing quantum technologies to address complex societal challenges such as energy systems, logistics, and climate modelling. By combining scientific expertise with creative design approaches, the project helps bridge the gap between advanced research and public understanding.

A selection of the student works, focusing on themes such as atomic structures, infinity, and quantum states, will be presented in a public installation at the Qubit building on the ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø campus and featured during Dutch Design Week 2026. Additional works are expected to be exhibited more widely in the Netherlands and beyond.

This collaboration highlights the strength of interdisciplinary partnerships in the Eindhoven region, bringing together science, design, and education to make complex technologies more accessible and engaging for society.
