Frans Willems receives 2025 IEEE Hamming Medal

Professor Willems has made fundamental contributions as a researcher and educator in the field of information theory. During his career he has contributed more than two hunderd journal and conference papers in the areas of multi-user information theory, noiseless source coding, data compression, data embedding, digital communication and biometrics. Next to that he holds several patents and he has done a lot of work for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The Hamming medal is awarded annually by the IEEE to individuals or teams for exceptional contributions to information sciences, systems, and technology. Subject areas include information theory, coding theory, data communication, computer networks, data storage and retrieval, and image and speech understanding. The Hamming Medal is named after the American scientist Richard Hamming who contributed a lot to computer engineering and telecommunications with his work.
