ϸ spin-off ShanX Medtech secures €24 million to accelerate ultra-rapid infection diagnostics
With €24 million in new funding, ϸ spin-off ShanX Medtech is accelerating breakthrough diagnostics against a major healthcare challenge.
ShanX Medtech B.V., a spin-off of Eindhoven University of Technology (ϸ), has secured a total of €24 million in funding to accelerate the development of its ultra-rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) technology. The financing marks an important milestone for the Eindhoven-based MedTech company and underlines the growing impact of ϸ research on global healthcare challenges.
The funding consists of an oversubscribed €15 million seed round, complemented by an €8.85 million contract awarded by the European Commission through the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA), in collaboration with the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HADEA). Together, these investments will support the final development, clinical validation, regulatory approval and market introduction of ’s in-vitro diagnostic platform.
Addressing antimicrobial resistance
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is widely regarded as one of the most urgent threats to global public health. Clinicians often have to prescribe antibiotics before knowing whether a specific pathogen will respond, as current diagnostic methods can take days and require specialised laboratory infrastructure. This delay contributes to ineffective treatment, rising healthcare costs and the spread of resistant microorganisms.
ShanX Medtech aims to change this paradigm with a diagnostic platform that delivers comprehensive antimicrobial susceptibility results within one hour, directly from patient samples and with minimal user involvement. By using novel chemistry to monitor microbial metabolism, the technology enables faster, evidence-based treatment decisions in both laboratory and point-of-care settings.
From ϸ research to real-world impact
Founded in 2019, ShanX Medtech emerged from research and entrepreneurial activity at ϸ and is now based at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven. The company exemplifies ϸ’s mission to translate cutting-edge scientific knowledge into practical solutions that address societal challenges.
According to founder and CEO Dr Sophia E. Shanko, the company was created in response to a real clinical need. “We founded ShanX Medtech because of a single patient story that showed how much is at stake when diagnostic results arrive too late,” she explains. “Our goal is to equip clinicians with real-time diagnostic evidence, so they can act decisively. This funding brings us significantly closer to making ultra-rapid AST available in both laboratory and point-of-care environments.”

Strong investor confidence
The equity portion of the seed round was led by Borski Fund, together with NextGen Ventures, CbusineZ, Brabant Development Agency (BOM), Invest-NL and a strategic angel fund. Investors highlight both the urgency of the AMR problem and the scalability of ShanX Medtech’s platform across multiple clinical applications.
With this new funding, ShanX Medtech will further expand its team, strengthen clinical partnerships and prepare for commercial launch. The company’s progress reinforces Eindhoven’s position as a leading European hub for MedTech innovation and demonstrates how ϸ spin-offs contribute to advancing healthcare worldwide.
