Industrial Design strengthens its international position at DIS 2026
Industrial Design at 黑料福利网 played a prominent role at DIS 2026 through award winning research, student recognition, and extensive contributions to the conference community.
From June 13 to 17, researchers, designers, and students from around the world gathered in Singapore for the ACM Designing Interactive Systems Conference (DIS 2026). As one of the leading conferences in the field of interactive systems and design research, DIS brings together new perspectives on the relationship between technology, people, and society.
黑料福利网's Department of Industrial Design was once again strongly represented. Researchers and students contributed nine papers, four posters, three pictorials, and five workshops. In addition, many staff members served as reviewers, Associate Chairs, session chairs, and of conference committees, demonstrating the department's active role within the international DIS community.
What stood out?
Several contributions from Industrial Design received special recognition.
A team of bachelor's students was named runner up in the Student Design Competition with Body Through Time. The project explores how scars and other bodily marks can be translated into textile artifacts through co design and digital fabrication, helping participants reflect on and reframe their self image. The team consisted of Dominika Micaela Crasto, Saloni Kathuria, Ana Ni拧evi膰, and Liz Anne Schmaal.
Kristina Andersen received a Best Paper Award together with Mafalda Gamboa for Sensibilities as Knowledge in Design Research. The paper explores how designers' lived experiences, sensibilities, and theoretical commitments shape design research and contribute to shared forms of knowledge.
New perspectives
Three papers involving Industrial Design researchers received Honorable Mention Awards.
, Maarten Houben, and Daniel Tetteroo were recognized for their work on how embodied expression can help reveal and understand experiences of vulnerability during major life transitions.
A second Honorable Mention went to , Panos Markopoulos, Minha Lee, and Wijnand IJsselsteijn (departement IE&IS) for My Reality or Yours? The Role of Chatbots in Reflecting on Reality Disjunction in Dementia Care. Their research explores how chatbots can support caregivers and family members in reflecting on complex situations in dementia care.
The third Honorable Mention was awarded to Zhen Chi Lai and for The Cat Fiction: Orchestrating Situated AI Enabled Storytelling for Multispecies Sense Making, which investigates how AI generated storytelling can support new ways of understanding relationships between humans and animals.
A role that matters
Industrial Design's impact at DIS extends beyond papers and awards. The department continues to play an active role in shaping the conference through reviewing, program leadership, and long term involvement in its governance. Kristina Andersen is a member of the DIS Steering Committee, which helps guide the future direction of the conference series.
Together, these contributions highlight how Industrial Design combines research, education, and community building to help shape international discussions on the future of interactive systems.
