RESEARCH PROFILE
René van Donkelaar is Professor in Education in Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø). He is Program Director for the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Biomedical Engineering, Dean of ºÚÁϸ£Àû꿉۪s Honors Academy, and Dean of the Graduate School. In these roles, he contributes to the development of high-quality, future-oriented education and supports students in shaping their academic and professional development.
His research focuses on articular cartilage. He combines experimental work with computational modeling to understand how cartilage develops, functions, adapts, and degenerates. A central theme in his work is the relationship between cartilage composition, structure, and mechanical behavior.
This integrated approach is applied to questions in tissue engineering and osteoarthritis research, linking fundamental insights in tissue mechanics to clinically relevant challenges in joint health. Through both his educational leadership and scientific work, Van Donkelaar aims to connect engineering, biology, and medicine in ways that benefit students, researchers, and society.
To me, science is chasing the moment when you finally understand how many findings fit together. I wish everybody a few of such eureka moments in their career.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
René van Donkelaar studied Biomedical Sciences at Radboud University Nijmegen, graduating in 1994 with a focus on skeletal bone growth. His PhD dissertation at the Department of Human Movement Sciences at Maastricht University, under the supervision of Professors Maarten Drost (UM), Harm Kuipers (UM), and Jan Janssen (ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø), was entitled Skeletal muscle mechanics: a numerical and experimental approach to spatial phenomena. In 1998, he joined ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø as one of the first faculty members of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He was appointed Professor in Education in Biomedical Engineering in 2026.
His research, subsequently in the groups of Professors Frank Baaijens, Rik Huiskes, and Keita Ito, has focused on cartilage mechanics, development, damage, and repair, combining computational and experimental approaches.
Since July 2017, he has served as Program Director of the Bachelor's program Biomedische Technologie and the Master's programs in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Engineering. His broad commitment to education at the institutional level and to the personal development of early-career scientists led to his appointments as Dean of ºÚÁϸ£Àû꿉۪s Honors Academy in January 2024 and Dean of the Graduate School in November 2025.
