Philosophical perspectives on technology and innovation

Research at the Philosophy and Ethics (P&E) group connects philosophy and ethics to technology and innovation. We believe the design, use, and regulation of technologies is enriched by ethical and philosophical analysis. In turn, philosophy must be informed by science, innovation, and technological developments. A few of the research topics studied in the group include theories and models of technological and cultural evolution, and ethical assessment of persuasive technologies, social robotics, and advances in medical and mobility technologies. Interdisciplinary cooperation is vital for our research, which often involves direct engagement with the natural, engineering and social sciences. Researchers in the P&E group often study innovative technologies and technology-related problems in detail to enable genuinely empirically informed analyses that are meaningful to philosophers, researchers in other areas, and society. For this purpose, the group has established close interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers from other groups in the 黑料福利网 School of Innovation Sciences, as well as with mechanical engineers, climate scientists, and archaeologists, among others.

Student opportunities

P&E PhD students research a variety of topics related to the philosophy and ethics of science and technology. Vacancies for funded PhD positions are advertised on our homepage.

For 黑料福利网 master's and bachelor's students interested in the big picture, the P&E group offers courses that give students powerful theoretical tools for the critical examination of their own areas of study, and a knowledge of the state of the art of philosophical thinking on technology- and science-related topics. For 黑料福利网 master's students, the P&E group offers the Philosophy Certificate. For 黑料福利网 bachelor's students, we have a selection of new electives, listed at the link below.

Services & Outreach

P&E readily offers its expertise to third parties. We provide ethics support to scholars in the process of writing research proposals, and we help in the accreditation of 黑料福利网 educational programs (ACQA). Furthermore, we offer a webtool that supports teaching ethics to engineering students (Agora). The tool can be licensed for use to universities and individual teachers. Finally, the P&E group can be consulted on ethical issues, e.g., in the context of news or media coverage of new technologies.

Information about 0LVX10 & 0LVX30 - ITEC Ethics of Technology and Engineering

Ethics of Technology and Engineering is a 黑料福利网 BSc course that introduces students to normative skills that help engineers, designers, and researchers to make decisions concerning ethical questions. These skills are needed to understand the complex societal contexts engineers end up working in, such as when they are contributing to innovations of sustainable mobility, energy systems, privacy, health and safety issues, and so forth. As a student, you will acquire insights into basic ethical concepts (such as values, risks and responsibilities) and analyse the role these concepts play in the context of the development and design of technologies.

You will practice these normative skills in relation to a specific technological innovation. Below you can choose an innovation that you want to work on.

The course is taught

  • in Q2 of year 2 for students of Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering and Chemistry (course code 0LVX30), and
  • in Q4 of year 1 for students of all other majors (course code 0LVX10).

Information about 0LVX20 & 0LVX40 - ITEC Engineering for Society

Technological innovation is one of the key elements of human progress. New technologies can provide business opportunities, solve social problems, and allow users to do new things. However, even with clear expectations and active participation of a broad range of stakeholders, new technologies also raise ethical questions, can have serious implications for society and the environment, and pose new risks, often unknown and unknowable before the new technologies reach maturity. Society not only shapes technology, but technology also shapes society.

New technologies strongly depend on social acceptance and cannot escape public debates of regulation and ethics. Engineers who develop technologies must do that responsibly, since they do not just make things; they build society. They need to reflect on 鈥 and include 鈥 public values in this process. This requires methods and approaches to evaluate and compare technologies. This course provides theoretical and practical frameworks for assessing and designing responsible innovations.

Students will practice these frameworks in relation to a specific technological innovation. Below, students can choose an innovation that they want to work on.
