Perinatal - Neonatal Research
Perinatal care touches mother and child from early pregnancy through the first fragile weeks of life. e/MTIC's perinatal research program brings together clinicians, engineers and industry to define a shared research vision and roadmap. Turning promising technologies into real improvements in maternal, fetal and neonatal care, faster.
Our strategy is to detect pregnancy complications and neonatal risks earlier, monitor mother and child with less burden and more precision, and bring care closer to home wherever possible. We pave the way for technological healthcare products and solutions to be rapidly implemented in the healthcare system by combining our strengths, working towards a shared vision and win-wins for all partners involved.
Strategy
Our strategy rests on three main strategic pillars:
- Directing clinical research: running clinical studies that measure the impact of new monitoring and diagnostic technology on maternal and neonatal outcomes (7 ongoing clinical studies across obstetrics and neonatology).
- Technological Healthcare innovation: developing AI-supported decision support, unobtrusive sensing (electrohysterography, wireless vital-sign monitoring) and digital-twin models for the placenta and fetus.
- Implementation & scaling: moving validated innovations. such as the Bambi Belt, from pilot into standard clinical practice, and building the data infrastructure needed to sustain this.
Research
The research is organised around two connected domains that reflect the full perinatal care pathway:
- Perinatal care -Obstetrics
- Fetal monitoring & CTG innovation (electrohysterography, AI-based CTG interpretation, fetal movement detection)
- Placenta research & imaging (contrast-enhanced ultrasound, placenta modeling, foeto-maternal coupling)
- High-risk pregnancy home monitoring
- AI-assisted prenatal diagnostics (workflow and echo quality improvement)
- Neonatology
- Wireless vital-sign monitoring for preterm infants
- Long-term follow-up after preterm birth
- Sleep and motion monitoring for newborns
- Alarm management and reduction of alarm fatigue in the NICU
- Rapid sepsis screening after birth
Clinical decision support
The 2026 roadmap builds on this foundation through four connected lines of work:
- Sensor validation & remote monitoring: Validation of unobtrusive sensors — electrohysterography, wireless vital-sign belts, ultrasound-based CTG. Home and hospital monitoring for high-risk pregnancies and newborns (HASTA). Feasibility and user-experience studies for home@hospital care.
- Imaging innovations: Contrast-enhanced and speckle-tracking ultrasound for placenta and fetal cardiac assessment. AI-supported prenatal diagnostic imaging to improve workflow and echo quality. Preparation of imaging-based tools for fetal congenital heart disease detection.
- Data & AI integration: Predictive models linking fetal and maternal data for early risk detection of pregnancy complications (e.g. Yanqi Wu's early risk-prediction work). AI-based CTG interpretation. Alarm optimization for the (N)ICU, in collaboration with Philips, including a shared dataset initiative with Aachen.
- Modeling & digital twinning: Placenta and fetal models informed by clinical measurements, used to build clinical decision support for conditions such as pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction.
