> From ideas to clinical implementation
Innovation in healthcare is vital for advancing medical treatments, enhancing patient outcomes, and optimizing healthcare delivery. It drives the development of cutting-edge therapies, diagnostic tools, and technologies, which can improve quality and efficiency and reduce costs. Embracing innovation ensures that healthcare remains progressive, accessible, and effective. The field of healthcare is rich with potential ideas for innovation, however adoption in clinical practice is often delayed.
> Why is it so difficult to innovate?
Bringing a new idea into clinical practice is challenging. Hurdles to healthcare innovation include regulatory complexities, high development costs, ethical considerations, interoperability issues in adopting new technologies, and resistance to change within established healthcare systems. Balancing innovation with safety, affordability, and societal acceptance poses ongoing challenges in the dynamic landscape of healthcare.
> How can we tackle this problem?
Collaborative efforts between policymakers, industry stakeholders, and healthcare professionals can streamline regulations, allocate funding for research and development, and establish standards for interoperability. Encouraging a culture of openness to innovation, coupled with educational initiatives, helps overcome resistance to change. Embracing these solutions fosters a more conducive environment for healthcare innovation.
Inauguration - Carola van Pul
Prof.dr.ir. Carola van Pul works at Maxima Medical Centre as medical physicist and one day per week in the Biomedical Diagnostics lab at Eindhoven University of Technology. Her topic is 鈥榩hysics for diagnosing and monitoring鈥, with a special focus on patient monitoring and alarms for neonatal intensive care. After studying applied physics, she did her PhD in diffusion MRI for babies. In the last decade, her work has focused on the development and implementation of new sensor and monitoring techniques for clinical practice and on artificial intelligence approaches are also being investigated to predict deterioration in these small infants in an earlier stage

Inauguration - Coen Hurkmans
Prof.dr.ing. Coen Hurkmans is a part-time professor in Radiation Therapy Clinical Physics, a joint chair between the departments of Electrical Engineering and Experimental Physics. As the Head Clinical Physicist for Radiotherapy at Catharina Hospital, Hurkmans intends to build the bridge between the fundamental electrical engineering expertise, imaging and artificial intelligence expertise at 黑料福利网 and the clinical physics expertise at Catharina Hospital. This will help develop the potential of radiation oncology to the fullest.
Hurkmans鈥 main focus will be on implementation and validation of advanced radiation therapies. An important research topic will be improvement and efficient use of MR imaging for treatment planning and real-time tracking during radiation therapy. Artificial intelligence has the potential to speed up image reconstruction, opening the way to real-time, online adaptive replanning and radiation. Hurkmans will also be concerned with a broader range of clinical physics topics.
Hurkmans has over 100 peer-reviewed full paper and book chapter publications and is a popular invited speaker at many conferences. He is a member of several professional societies and committees, a reviewer for various scientific journals and editor of two journals.
