Future Wireless Interfaces: Technology and Circuit exploration (FWITEC)

The TKI project FWITEC establishes a collaboration between the Integrated Circuit and Photonic Integration group of the Department of Electrical Engineering with NXP Semiconductors. This project explores solutions for high data rate short distance communication devices using Indium Phosphide (InP) IC technology.

The global trend towards higher data-rate systems has substantially changed the way we live and interact and has had a tremendous economic impact. New wireless applications and devices have emerged that have by now reached nearly all citizens of the world. The increase in demand for higher data rate and system capacity is ongoing and continuously requires the scientific and industrial community to invent new systems. Only then, the insatiable need for high-data rate enabled applications can be fulfilled. This trend for higher data rate drives systems to work at increasingly high bandwidth which requires higher operating frequencies while maintaining the lowest possible energy consumption per transferred bit.

The FWITEC project explores the integration of ultra-high data rate transceivers into Indium Phosphide integrated circuit technology, one of the fastest semiconductor technologies in the world. It researches integrated circuit design in the H-band (220 - 325 GHz) and performs technology research on new InP based electronic devices and cleanroom processes.

Wireless Interfaces is the use-case in this project. It encompasses short range inter-chip and intra-chiplet communication, in-package communication up to in-house/in production-line line-of-sight (<10m) device to device communication. It is one of the relevant applications for high-volume in this frequency range and is identified as a high-volume market on which the semiconductor community has to prepare to benefit from the commercial success.

The FWITEC project is funded by Holland High Tech | TKI HSTM via the PPP Innovation Scheme (PPP-I) for public-private partnerships.
