Status update on the ACS Read and Publish deal
UPDATE February 20, 2026 | The contract for the ACS (American Chemical Society) Read and Publish deal is not yet finalized.
Are you planning to publish Open Access under a Read & Publish (R&P) agreement? Please note that the contract for the American Chemical Society (ACS) R&P deal has not yet been finalized.
There is no interruption in access to ACS journals and articles — you can continue reading as usual. However, to avoid unnecessary Article Processing Charges (APCs), researchers are advised to postpone Open Access publishing with ACS until the agreement has been finalized. We will provide a further update as soon as the contract is confirmed.
What are your options in the meantime?
- Publishing in a hybrid journal?
Choose traditional (subscription-based) publication. Under the Dutch copyright legislation (Taverne Amendment), we will make your article freely accessible in its final published version six months after publication in our repository. - Publishing in a hybrid journal with funding from the European Union or NWO?
Sometimes you may still need to pay a fee (APC) to meet your funder’s Open Access requirements. You have two options:
o Pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) to make the final published version of your article openly available.
o Pay an (ADC) to make your accepted manuscript openly available right away (with no embargo). - Publishing in a fully Open Access journal with EU or NWO funding?
APC costs may be eligible for payment from your grant budget. - Considering submitting a paper?
You may wish to explore Open Access publishing options with other publishers where agreements are currently in place. Check our tool to find out if a journal of your choice is covered.
