From Thriving Together: Healthy & Inclusive Environments, featuring innovative solutions for urban air quality, timber construction, and nature-inclusive design at Ketelhuisplein, to Theoria at Vertigo, an installation exploring the language and thinking behind architectural design, our exhibitions reveal how the built environment influences everyday life and how it can contribute to a better future for people and nature alike.

Thriving Together: Healthy & Inclusive Environments

Comfort you can feel, inclusion you can see

The spaces we inhabit influence how we feel, move and live—often in ways we barely notice. This exhibition explores how research and design can reveal these hidden forces and turn them into opportunities for better living. Through innovations in urban air quality, sustainable timber construction and nature-inclusive architecture, these projects explore how design, engineering and ecology can create places where people and nature thrive side by side.

Making the Invisible Visible: Designing Healthier Air in Cities

More than 80% of the world’s urban population is exposed to unhealthy air, according to the World Health Organization.

The ERIES–ValUr project addresses this challenge by improving our understanding of how air pollution spreads in cities. Using a detailed scale model of a city, researchers recreate airflow and pollution dispersion in a wind tunnel and measure how pollutants move through a dense and complex urban layout. The experimental results improve computer models and urban digital twins, supporting the design of healthier and more sustainable cities.

 (Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies) is a European initiative that advances research on the interaction between environmental hazards and the built environment through access to world-class experimental research infrastructures. Funded under the INFRA-2021-SERV-01-07: Research infrastructure services advancing frontier knowledge call, ERIES provides transnational access to Europe's leading facilities in structural, seismic, wind, and geotechnical engineering. By bringing together researchers, industry, and research institutions across Europe, the project fosters collaborative research that strengthens the resilience, sustainability, and performance of cities and critical infrastructure.

At Eindhoven University of Technology, the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel was one of the research infrastructures made available through ERIES. Here, seven user challenges addressed key scientific and societal questions related to environmental flows, natural hazards, and the built environment. ERIES-ValUr is one of these challenges, demonstrating how access to advanced research infrastructure supports collaborative research on societally relevant urban environmental challenges.

Vibration in timber floors

Timber floors give us more sustainable and circular constructions. However, their low self-weight also makes them more susceptible to human-induced vibrations, which can negatively affect occupant comfort.

Mass can be added, but it increases the material use and floor weight. The objective is to achieve acceptable vibration performance with the minimum amount of additional material, thereby preserving the sustainability advantages of lightweight timber construction. Hollow-core timber floors use the timber very efficient, while providing internal space to add the mass.

Stepwise the added mass is reduced while maintaining the acceptable comfort limits:

  • only add mass on most efficient locations.
  • place mass on springs and dampers (tuned mass dampers).
  • incorporating an isolated floating top-floor layer

The research is done within the research group TREE/e, which stands for Timber Research, Engineering and Education / Eindhoven. TREE/e is a group within the unit of ‘Structural Engineering and Design’ of the Department of the Built Environment at ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø.

We focus on timber research, embed this in the educational program and work in close collaboration with the timber industry.

Natuur-inbouw, optimizing unused spaces for animals

Modern construction methods and energy-efficient retrofitting are increasingly pushing nature out of our built environment. In particular, bats, sparrows, and swifts are losing their urban habitats, even though these animals are crucial for natural pest control in our immediate living environment.

Together with ecologists as part of a European project, we have optimized architectural details that create vital habitats for birds and bats, without adversely affecting residents. By testing these solutions directly in real-world projects, we seamlessly integrate biodiversity into architecture and demonstrate that nature-friendly construction can become the new urban standard.

The Natuur‑Inbouw project is a cross‑border collaboration between 21 partners from the Netherlands and Flanders, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and industry to integrate biodiversity into the built environment. The project responds to the loss of habitats caused by current building methods and energy-efficient renovations, which threaten building-dependent species such as bats, birds, and insects.

Through applied research, it develops and tests innovative building details and construction methods in real projects, aiming to embed ecological functions directly within architecture. Alongside technical innovation, the project emphasizes education, stakeholder engagement, and policy development, with the ambition of making nature-inclusive building a standard practice in future urban development.

The installation Theoria makes visible Jacob Voorthuis' lifelong philosophical project: an artistic venture to think carefully about words that matter to the design process and to get them to work well together.

As a philosopher of design, Voorthuis holds himself to exacting aesthetic standards. He does this not by changing words’ meanings, but by making their implicit meanings explicit, and by visualizing in diagrams what those meanings might look like. He is interested in the behavior a word helps to characterize, and in the way words and images behave in discourse, particularly in the all-important game of giving and asking for reasons that must underpin every design decision. To do this well, he ensures that the activity one word or image represents is both different from and complementary to another, so they can work together like a team without getting in each other's way. Focused on words important to the architectural design process, Voorthuis has recrafted them to fit together 'beautifully,' so that each can play a clear and satisfying role in any design conversation. Theoria invites you, as a fellow muddler, to decide for yourself whether he has done a good job.

MOD[us]

MOD[us] is an adaptive modular building system by Team VIRºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø for the Netherlands’ changing spatial needs. One shared structural and technical DNA lets modules shift between housing and Meet[us] spaces, reducing vacancy and avoiding demolition.
