Algorithms to solve the control-to-facet problem for piecewise affine hybrid systems on polytopes with control limitations
APPLIED MATHEMATICS
Many high-tech systems can be modelled as hybrid systems with control limitations and safety restrictions. Using an interdisciplinary approach, a new procedure to control these systems is developed, proven and implemented in MATLAB. Additionally, relaxed conditions on controllability are proven, allowing engineers to control more systems.
Mathematics is the backbone of many technical disciplines: it does not only connect them but it enables us to move forward more quickly and efficiently.
Algebraic Characterisation of Bivariate Bicycle Codes
APPLIED PHYSICS
Quantum computers show problem solving potential far surpassing regular computers, but suffer from being error-prone. The recently developed bivariate bicycle error correction codes may provide the solution. In my thesis, I characterise and research the practical implementation of these novel codes, taking an important step towards a functional quantum computer.
Quantum computers can break new frontiers of problem solving, as long as errors don't break the code!
Design and Implementation of a Planar Coupled Inductor for GaN-based 膯uk Converters
AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Power electronics is essential but often invisible. This project introduces a ripple cancellation technique in coupled inductors for C虂uk converters, eliminating bulky filters and reducing component size. The result: smaller, more efficient energy converters 鈥 ideal for future applications in electronics, mobility, and renewable energy systems.
Power electronics is the technology everyone needs, but no one wants to see. My goal is to make it invisible 鈥 smaller, smarter, and quietly doing its job.
The Expression and Characterization of Protein M Mutants for Improved Dissociation Kinetics
BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING
Inspired by the success of continuous glucose monitoring in diabetes, continuous biosensors could enable faster, more responsive treatment for a wide variety of diseases. In my work, I modified proteins that can be used for these continuous biosensors. Specialized protein complexes are promising tools in the development of continuous biosensing solutions.
Continuous biosensors have the power to revolutionize personalized healthcare.
Reducing pathway complexity in crowded environments by increasing disorder
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AND CHEMISTRY
Supramolecular polymers consist of building blocks held together via labile bonds. They hold great promise to create functional smart materials with unprecedented properties that could have applications in healthcare, soft robotics and energy. In my research I developed a strategy to ease the processing of such polymers into functional devices.
Introducing disorder is essential for establishing structural order in complex molecular systems.
Diversity In Hackathons
DATA SCIENCE
My research shows that when hackathons use inclusive messaging and mentorship, female participation triples. The thesis offers a clear framework for organizers to intentionally design equity into tech events鈥攁nd turn good intentions into measurable results.
Designing for equity means refusing to leave it up to luck.
Magnetic Primitive Library
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
The Magnetic Primitive Library helps designers create moving, shape-changing objectsVusing magnets and soft materials. By making this technology more accessible, the project opens new possibilities for inclusive tools, interactive products, and sustainable design鈥攂ringing advanced materials into everyday life in creative and meaningful ways.
Magnetic materials made accessible - bridging the lab and life through design
Forecasting the Outpatient Demand to Improve Bernhoven鈥檚 Session Planning
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING
As care demand rises and medical staff shortages increase, smart planning becomes essential. In my thesis, I developed a forecasting model that helps Bernhoven鈥檚 cardiology and neurology outpatient clinics plan care three months ahead based on the expected number of patients (appointments). This improves resource efficiency and ensures patients receive timely access to care.
Smart planning of care isn鈥檛 just a hospital task; it鈥檚 a societal necessity.
Design and Analysis of a sensor-housing, lightblocking suction cup
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
How can we reduce fruit waste by picking at the right time? My project focused on designing and analyzing suction cups to house a spectral sensor. By blocking out as much ambient light as possible, the sensor can gather reliable data, used in research on predicting the ripeness of apples non-destructively.
Designing soft suction cups to solve hard problems.
Haptic exploration strategies for determining a stable grip of familiar and unfamiliar objects
PSYCHOLOGY & tECHNOLOGY
One touch, glance, or memory often gives humans all they need for a stable ovject grip. In contrast, robots struggle with limited vision, especially with unfamiliar objects. I identified two subconscious, familiarity-based touch strategies, offering insights to translate intuitive human behavior into robotic systems that perform reliably in the unpredictable real-world.
The more we uncover about how humans intuitively interact with the world, the better we can design robots that truly fit into it.
