Localization from all echoes of a fixed sound source in a convex two-wall 2D environment

APPLIED MATHEMATICS

I cooked up the following: Localization, determining where something is, is fundamental to applications ranging from nav igation to robotics. Despite its importance, the conditions guaranteeing success are not always well understood. In my thesis, I investigate localization from unlabelled distances in simple envi ronments and prove precisely when unique reconstruction is possible, laying the groundwork for a deeper understanding of localization in more complex environments.

Symmetry elegantly appears in many places, including where it is least desired.

Investigating radio frequencies in the planeterrella

APPLIED PHYSICS

The planeterrella is a set-up that simulates various space plasmas. In my research, I investigated which radio waves occur in this set-up, and if they can be linked to those in near-Earth space. With this project, I have opened the door for using radio measurements in plasma physics experiments. 

The plasma inside the Planeterrella is unpredictable and never does the same thing twice; radio measurements revealed otherwise.

Expression and Characterization of BindCraft-Designed De Novo Protein Competitors for Small Molecule Detection

I used AI-based protein design tools to generate proteins that target disease-related molecules. Traditional protein engineering is slow and laborious, relying on iterative modification of existing proteins. We tested whether AI can design functional proteins faster — and validated that it can. This could significantly speed up how we develop medical diagnostics.

Experimental study of the TCD of methane reaction kinetics in an FBR

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING & CHEMISTRY

Clean hydrogen production is essential for reducing reliance on fossil fuels, but current production routes are often limited by CO2 emissions or high energy demand. Thermocatalytic methane decomposition offers a promising alternative, yet remains underdeveloped. In my thesis, I investigate its kinetics and lab-scale reactor behaviour to support future scale-up. 

A promising reaction can become a large-scale process only when its behaviour is well understood and predictable.

Accent-Aware DeepFake Detection: Benchmarking Robustness against Text-to-Speech generated accented speech

DATA SCIENCE

AI tools that detect fake voices are failing people with non-native accents, putting millions at greater risk from voice fraud and disinformation. I built a dataset covering 9 accent groups to put current detectors to the test, and showed that with the right training data, they can become fairer and more reliable for everyone.

We can’t protect people from the dangers of AI unless we show AI what people really are like.

Reconfigurable Rectifier-Based Resonant Converter for Wide Output Voltage Applications

As newer electric vehicles transition from 400V to 800V or 1200V systems, charging infrastructure must adapt to support diverse charging standards. Addressing this need, my thesis proposes a flexible solution that allows a single charger to serve multiple vehicle generations, without needing complicated hardware architectures. 

From steam to silicon, each technological era has reflected a change in how power is converted. As we transition to renewable power, a new era is taking shape, with power electronics at centre stage.

To address complex societal problems, policymakers need to deeply consider diverse perspectives. Through an approach that embraces complexity, I designed a collaborate tool that helps stakeholder groups visualize shared challenges. By distributing control, equal participation drives policy design that prioritizes long-term societal value.

Enhancing the Sourcing Process in Bosch’s Technical Purchasing Department through Process Redesign

Many new products are delayed because components arrive too late. This research redesigned and simulated a smarter purchasing process at Bosch, cutting delivery timelines by over half. The result: products reach the market faster and at lower cost. The approach is replicable across any industry where supply chain delays slow down innovation. 

The most expensive assumptions are the ones nobody thought to test because they appeared too obvious to question.

This project compares two existing synthesis algorithms, providing practical insights that help engineers reduce computational effort and support more resource-efficient development of advanced manufacturing systems.

The role of Microalgae-based Analogues in the Transition away from Meat Consumption

SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION 

Growing concerns over the implications of industrial meat production provide opportunities for  microalgae-meat replacements to help transition to plant-based diets. This thesis investigates the barriers for successful adoption of the innovation in the Dutch food system. The findings suggest that policy support, public awareness, and academic-industrial collaborations are critical.
