AuditoriumBuiten gebaande paden: Over het structuur-functie probleem in de hersenchirurgie
Prof.dr. Geert-Jan Rutten was appointed Professor of Computational Neurosurgery at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven University of Technology (ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø) on June 9, 2025. He will deliver his inaugural lecture on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
The title of the lecture, which will be delivered in Dutch, is
Buiten gebaande paden: Over het structuur-functie probleem in de hersenchirurgie
Beyond the Beaten Paths: On the Structure–Function Problem in brain surgery
About the lecture
In his lecture, Geert-Jan challenges prevailing clinical views on brain function and neurosurgical decision-making. Central to the lecture is the limitation of the classical neurological model, which views the brain as a map of fixed functional areas. This model is inadequate in clinical practice and provides insufficient guidance for predicting the effects of surgery on daily functioning.
Intraoperative electrical stimulation during awake brain surgery — currently regarded as the gold standard — also has important methodological limitations. This raises the question of how we can achieve better, more patient-centred decision-making.
Advanced MRI techniques offer new opportunities to map the complex brain network of the individual patient. Combined with techniques such as machine learning, this creates the prospect of more accurate prediction of treatment outcomes.
The ultimate ambition is to move towards virtual neurosurgery, in which predictive models contribute to personalised decision-making, with explicit attention to cognitive functioning, personal goals and quality of life.
