In this lunch roundtable, John van der Schaaf, full professor at the Chemical Engineering and Chemistry department, presents an integrative approach to learning supported by digital testing, where basic knowledge elements are taught in modules through short video lectures and exercises. The knowledge is applied in practical elements, and students can enrol for a test or a retake when they are ready to test themselves. Students receive feedback on their answer during the test and can correct it; the test result is thus immediately clear to them. In case of a fail, the students are encouraged to seek feedback from teachers, tutors, or peers and improve their understanding and proficiency; they can then retake the test without penalty.

This assessment of knowledge elements is more intensive than by more conventional single exam assessment, and is expected to improve the skills and knowledge levels of students, as well as their progress later through the curriculum. Success rates for notoriously challenging courses increase, with time-on-task in this system of regular, distributed testing being the main reason for success. The regular feedback on level of understanding helps students to study and provides low-level pressure to avoid procrastination. Passing tests gives them confidence and motivation to continue, and the possibility of quick retakes of tests lowers the stakes and reduces stress.
