How do you judge quality when traditional rubrics do not tell the whole story? Consider two airplanes flying overhead. It is difficult to estimate their exact altitude, but it is surprisingly easy to see which one is flying higher. Comparative Judgement builds on this intuition: instead of scoring student work against a list of criteria, assessors compare two pieces of work and simply decide which is better. By combining many such comparisons, a reliable ranking emerges that reflects the collective judgement of experts.

In this session, Maarten Goossens (Comproved and Antwerp University) introduces the principles behind Comparative Judgement, explaining why it works, when it is most useful, and addressing common misconceptions and pitfalls.

Following this introduction, Kayleigh Williams and Willem-Bart Bartels – both teachers at the department of ME – will present the first experiences from an ME pilot in a CBL course. They will present the initial results and reflect on the practical challenges and pitfalls they encountered firsthand, including some that they unknowingly stepped into.

This session will provide both a concise introduction to Comparative Judgement and honest practical insights from a first implementation. We also invite participants to share their own experiences and ideas, helping us identify existing initiatives and potential opportunities for future pilots within our programs and courses.
