ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø’s science pitching competition Talking Science is back, and it will take place on Friday December 11^th as part of the Winter Village! This year’s edition will be the fourth edition of the competition.

In Talking Science, participants are given three minutes to pitch about their own research. They cannot use slides, but props are allowed to support the pitch. Pitches must be delivered in English, and the pitch needs to be presented in an understandable and engaging manner for a diverse audience.

Like last year, this year’s Talking Science is open to EngD, PhD, and Postdoctoral researchers.

We invite entries from researchers at all stages of their research journey – whether they have just begun their research project or they are about to finish.

How to enter

To enter Talking Science, you need to submit the following information about you and your topic:

• Name
• Department
• Supervisor(s)
• Email address
• Telephone number
• Catchy title for your pitch
• A short, easy-to-understand summary of your research (no more than 100 words)
• A short text about your motivation for taking part in the competition (no more than 40 words)
• A video or voice recording (no longer than 1 minute) of you talking about your research and why you want to be part of Talking Science (this is optional)

Please note that the video or voice recording is not a requirement for an entry to Talking Science. However, a video or voice recording will provide those involved in the selection process with additional details on you and your project. 

If you opt to include a video as part of your submission, to help you with the recording.

You can record a short voice recording of yourself using your laptop or your smartphone.

The deadline for submissions is Thursday September 24^th at 13:00. This is a strict deadline. Entries that are received after this time will not be considered for the competition.

The organisation committee will then select the participants from the entries and you will be informed of the outcome on Tuesday September 29th.  

Key dates for the competition

To take part in Talking Science, you need to be available for three key dates over the duration of the competition:

• Pitch training, Thursday October 29^th 14:00 – 18:00: The pitch training will be delivered by ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø science communicator Dr Barry Fitzgerald. The pitch training will take place in the Atlas building in room 10.301.

• Feedback on your pitch, Tuesday November 24^th 13:00 – 18:00: Approximately two weeks before the final you will get the chance to pitch to Barry Fitzgerald during a feedback session. It is advisable to deliver your pitch in person to maximise the effectiveness of the feedback session. However, if required and subject to special circumstances, the feedback session can take place online This feedback session is optional in terms of attendance.

• Talking Science pitch final, Friday December 11^th 14:00 – 16:00: The big final takes place as part of the ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø Winter Village. 12 participants will be selected to take part in the final, and the winner will be selected by a jury. There will also be an audience prize as part of the event.
