The Road (not) taken

Alumnus Biomedical Engineering Marc Vervuurt

How a medical engineer ended up in the House of Representatives.

What started as a broad interest in government and politics took an unexpected turn for Marc Vervuurt (32). In the recent elections, he ended up in the House of Representatives on behalf of D66, earlier than planned. His background as a medical engineer and his fascination for decision-making come together there, but did not always go hand in hand naturally.  How did his route to the political center come about and which moments determined his course?

Not only the biomedical aspect, but the combination with mathematics, chemistry and physics made the Biomedical Engineering (BME) study attractive to the young Marc Vervuurt. I see myself as a generalist with a broad orientation and I find several domains interesting, he says on a Friday afternoon on the eleventh floor of the Atlas building. The alumnus and brand new member of parliament - who was busy talking on one of his two phones just before - makes a stopover at his alma mater on his way from The Hague to his hometown of Venlo. According to him, the Brabant geniality, the small-scale character, the balanced male-female distribution and the personal approach by teachers contributed to a pleasant study time. When I'm here, it still feels a bit like home, he looks back.

Making choices

His fascination for the way in which organizations are set up and how decision-making is made arose during his studies. In the first year, he joined BME's program committee and later took a seat on the faculty council. I find the role, the mandate and the considerations you make as a representative, the administrative dynamics, particularly interesting. I had never minced my words, so I always said what I thought of something, he explains his interest.

Idealist

After the city council beckoned at one point, he started looking for a party that suited him and, after an extensive orientation, opted for D66. Because progressive and an idealist, is how he describes himself. But, he emphasizes, my choice for this party was mainly determined by positions on medical-ethical themes, such as abortion and euthanasia, which I am in favor of. He was not elected during the municipal elections, but did start as a committee member at the Provincial Council for his party. In this role I was able to gain experience and sometimes speak, it was a kind of learning and practice place. Covid, a governance crisis and the resignation of the Limburg Provincial Executive. It was an instructive and exciting time, he looks back.

Promotion

After a bachelor's degree in medical sciences and technology, a master's degree in medical engineering and several relevant internships and projects, he set his sights on a future as a clinical chemist, or laboratory specialist. To increase his chances of finding a training place, he obtained his PhD on research into a disease related to Alzheimer's.

Bubble

After being elected to the Venlo city council in 2022, he combined his PhD research with being a council member. According to him, a substantially different experience than his work for the Provincial Council. But the work helped him to step outside his own social bubble and connect with other groups in society. The level and ideological depth of the debate at the provincial level are higher, while local politics focuses more on practical and concrete issues. These differences sometimes caused frustration, but they also offered valuable insights into diverse political perspectives.

The tipping point

The fact that combining two major interests can sometimes also close a path became apparent in his application for a training place for laboratory specialists. The fact that I was also on the city council was unusual. Although the profile suits me, I am therefore atypical. The fact that this road was closed was a disappointment, but with my broad interest and generalist attitude, I could easily switch.

Election victory

After the previous cabinet fell, he was asked to run for MP for his party. Because of his job at an elderly organization, plans to buy a house and a desire to have children in the longer term, he did not aspire a high place on the list, but he did want to gain campaign experience and get votes in Limburg. The unexpectedly large election victory led him, earlier than expected, to a seat in the House of Representatives.

Portfolio

He expects that his typical science mentality: curious, experimental and focused on trying out, will serve him well in his new working environment. It's exciting and stimulating, but I love it. No one can take this experience away from me. The medical care portfolio suits me very well, so everything comes together in this place, my public administration interest and biomedical engineering background.
