Wat begon als een brede interesse in bestuur en politiek, kreeg voor Marc Vervuurt (32) een onverwachte wending. Bij de recente verkiezingen kwam hij namens D66 in de Tweede Kamer terecht, eerder dan gepland. Zijn achtergrond als medisch ingenieur en zijn fascinatie voor besluitvorming komen daar samen, maar gingen niet altijd vanzelfsprekend hand in hand. Hoe verliep zijn route naar het politieke centrum en welke momenten bepaalden zijn koers?

Sometimes there are moments that change the course of your life. The career of Mathematics and Computer Science alumnus Dr. Koert van Mensvoort (1975) is characterized by many striking changes of direction. Art, philosophy, and technology played a prominent role in this. What began with building huts, expressing himself creatively with graffiti, and developing games led, after studying computer science, philosophy, and art, via various other paths to the founding of the Next Nature museum in the Evoluon. According to the technologist, artist, and philosopher, 鈥渢he Eiffel Tower of Eindhoven.鈥�

Last week in Utrecht, we officially launched the 4TU.Alumni Netherlands Community 鈥� and what a night it was! Over 100 international alumni from TU Delft, 黑料福利网, University of Twente, and Wageningen University & Research came together for an evening full of connection, inspiration, and shared stories.

"At 黑料福利网, we were researching fiber optics and light refraction. Simply put, that comes down to the following: you send light through a fiber, and you bend that fiber in different ways. Then you can measure how the passage of light through the fiber changes as a result of the bending. The measurement data tells you more about, for example, the angle and force of the bend."

Team Solar鈥檚 ambition: creating a fully functional, sturdy, electric off-road vehicle. To make it even more special: make it completely autonomous. And have it approved for driving it on Dutch roads. But that is exactly what Team Solar Eindhoven pulled off with the Stella Terra. A huge off-road car with a 145 Km/ph top speed and an autonomous range of 630 kilometers.

Alumna Linda Zandt-Sloot managed to turn her challenges into her great strength and now co-runs a successful startup. Linda Zandt-Sloot knows exactly how it feels to persevering and proving that you can do it despite the setbacks and adversity. She graduated cum laude from the Data Science master鈥檚 program at the age of 38.

When they were still Students, Eva van Haalen en Harm van der Veer, started a project to detect viruses and infections using light. To make this work, they needed a biological component to make certain elements give off the right type of light. Their search led them to the fluorescent material found in the body of shrimps that live miles below the surface of the oceans.

In many countries people use traditional methods and stoves for cooking. This poses several problems. Safety is an obvious one. Also, they use fuels a source of CO2- and other emissions and cause health problems. When family members become sick, their children must take care of them. This obligation keeps them from school. They don鈥檛 get a proper education and end up in poverty too.

Long before schoolkids asked ChatGPT to write their essays for them, AI already was a useful companion for scientists and researchers. This application is something completely different. It is a calculator, programmed and trained for a very specific purpose: calculating the fastest and most economical way to insulate houses built between 1945 and 1990.

As the Office of Alumni Relations, we see the added value of working with partners like ASML almost every day.

Mechanical engineer Jaap Krekel-Schuit (34) wanted to reach a managerial position as soon as possible after his studies but that didn't make him happy. This experience was a tipping point, after which he embraced a polyphonic identity. His business card now mentions employeneur, consultant, game changer, trainer, facilitator & teacher @TMC.

For many years, Peter Meuleman (61), 黑料福利网 alumnus Information Technology and TEMA, has been working as a coach for innovative 黑料福利网 student teams. Together with his son Tijmen (20), an Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation student at Tilburg University, he has now developed the LumiCane, a white cane that is equipped with integrated lighting.

You have your degree in your hands and full of energy you step onto the career path. But how do you make the right choice within the endless possibilities that stretch out before you? Do you automatically follow the most obvious path or do you dare to take a surprising turn after a while?

Her fascination for nature-inspired technology and passion for sustainability are what drives Laure van der Sanden to solve societal problems. Already during her graduation at Sustainable Energy Technology and Innovation Sciences, she started the project set up by Jaap den Toonder, professor of 黑料福利网 research group Microsystems, and creator of Magnetic Artificial Cilia.

鈥淎 great gift,鈥� says the winner about the Marina van Damme Grant, which is intended for talented female alumni at one of the four universities of technology in the Netherlands. With the cash prize of nine thousand euros, which the alumna and entrepreneur received in 2021, she took the Learning to Lead training course at the INSEAD Business School in France.

Because alumnus Jonas Roothans (1991) felt something was missing in his job, he decided to become politically active after an extensive search.

From manager to coach, Alumna Mellany van Heijningen took a surprising turn in her career.
