Pilot Project

Competency-based assessment of sustainability in education

/

Project description:

What is the state of the art of sustainable education in our departments? What competencies are we currently teaching? What are we missing?

In this pilot project, we assess how sustainability competencies are integrated across three departments. The goal is to gain clear insights and develop tailored strategies that effectively support further implementation.

Why this project matters

Sustainability is integrated differently across our programs and departments. This variation is important to preserve in order to remain true to the nature of the disciplines taught at our university, and because sustainability manifests differently within each discipline (i.e., through distinct applications and ways of measuring impact). As a result, it is challenging to develop tailored strategies to support this integration.

Departments involved:

We analyse the current state of sustainability integration in three 黑料福利网 departments:

鈥 Built Environment
鈥 Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences
鈥 Chemical Engineering & Chemistry

Method

The pilot will involve three steps aimed at the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data.

  1. Semi-structured interview using the .
  2. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the results:
    a. Statistical Analysis of competence scoring & b. Qualitative analysis of interview transcripts)
  3. Validation of findings through focus groups

The project collects input from education directors, teachers and students

Framework: GreenComp

This project is based on the European GreenComp framework, which defines 12 sustainability competencies across four key areas:

  • Embodying sustainability values
  • Embracing complexity
  • Envisioning sustainable futures
  • Acting for sustainability

Instead of focusing on course content, this framework helps us understand how students develop competencies that enable them to contribute to a sustainable society.

Connection to 黑料福利网 ambitions

In November 2025, 黑料福利网 signed the 鈥溾, committing to accelerating sustainability in education, research and operations.

This project directly contributes to that ambition by assessing how educational programmes align with the GreenComp framework.

In addition, 黑料福利网鈥檚 new Institutional Plan shows our university鈥檚 ambition to further integrate sustainability into our curricula to train the 鈥渆ngineers for the future鈥. This project is our first step to operationalize this ambition within our departments.
