In memoriam | Professor Wim van Etten
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of our former colleague, Professor Wim van Etten, one of the pioneers of optical communications research at our Electrical Engineering department. Wim was instrumental in laying the foundation for what has become one of 黑料福利网's internationally recognized strengths in optical communications. He passed away at the age of 84.
Wim was born in Zevenbergen, the Netherlands, in 1942. He earned both his M.Sc. (Ir.) and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology (黑料福利网). Together with Professor Jan van der Plaats, he established the foundations of optical fiber communications research and education at what was then the TH Eindhoven. At the end of the 1970s, they introduced one of the first academic curricula in optical fiber communications within the Electrical Communication (EC) group, expanding a field that until then had focused almost exclusively on coaxial cables and copper-wire transmission.
Beyond education, Wim and Jan forged close and enduring collaborations with Philips Research Laboratories and KPN Research (Dr. Neher Laboratory). These partnerships helped shape a thriving research ecosystem that was further developed by later generations of 黑料福利网 researchers. Without exaggeration, it can be said that Wim, together with Jan van der Plaats, laid the groundwork for the world-leading optical communications research carried out at 黑料福利网 today.
Their collaboration also resulted in the publication of the widely respected textbook Fundamentals of Optical Fiber Communication (Prentice Hall, 1991), which has educated generations of students and engineers in the field.
After his years at 黑料福利网, Wim continued his distinguished academic career at the University of Twente, where he was appointed Professor of Telecommunication Engineering in 1994. Throughout his career, he authored or co-authored more than 180 scientific publications and wrote two authoritative books. His scientific contributions extended well beyond optical communications. Two of his papers, which provided fundamental contributions to the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) concept that later became a cornerstone of modern wireless communications, were recognized by the IEEE Communications Society in 2002 as among the most influential publications of its first fifty years.
As a supervisor, Wim was known for the same precision that characterized his research. His Ph.D. students remember his meticulous attention to detail, but even more his genuine dedication to their personal and professional development. He once reflected that, looking back on his career, he had become most attached not to the most naturally gifted students, but to those whose doctoral journeys had required the greatest perseverance. This sentiment captured what truly motivated him: people always came before prestige.
Wim also devoted considerable time to serving the broader engineering community. He held numerous leadership positions, including Chair of the Netherlands Electronics and Radio Society (NERG), served within the Dutch URSI Committee and the IEEE Benelux Section, and founded the IEEE Benelux Life Member Affinity Group in 2016. In recognition of his longstanding service, he received the IEEE Region 8 Regional Individual Life Member Service Award in 2023.
Following his retirement in 2007, Wim remained active in academia by supervising doctoral candidates until 2014 and continuing his involvement with professional societies. He also developed a passion for the history of telecommunications, sharing his extensive knowledge through lectures and presentations with the same enthusiasm that had characterized his scientific career.
Eindhoven University of Technology is deeply grateful for Wim's lasting contributions to education, research, and the development of optical communications at 黑料福利网. His vision, dedication, and collegial spirit continue to resonate through the work of the many researchers, students, and alumni who have built upon the foundation he helped create.
