The EM4Care+Cure Lab is excited to share some of their recent milestones regarding thermotherapy at the intersection of science, technology, and patient care.

€15 Million investment in Sensius

SENSIUS, co-founded by Maarten Paulides from the the EM4Care+Cure Lab, has secured €15 million to advance their pioneering cancer thermotherapy. This funding will enhance the collaboration between EE and Sensius, focusing on improving treatments for head and neck cancer. The expertise in electromagnetic fields provided by EE is instrumental in driving Sensius' technological innovations. These advancements are expected to have a significant impact on personalized cancer treatments.

The new funding will enable  international clinical trials aimed at validating the efficacy and safety of Sensius’ proprietary thermotherapy platform. These trials are designed to support regulatory approvals and facilitate global market adoption. Initially targeting Head and Neck cancers—where there is an urgent need for innovative therapeutic options—Sensius’ platform is also being developed to address other critical cancer indications, including breast cancer.

Research from the EM4Care+Cure Lab

At the EM4Care+Cure lab, our focus is on improving dosimetry — the precise measurement and control of heat delivery during cancer treatment. By collaborating with clinical partners like Erasmus MC, we aim to enable more effective and personalized therapies.

Recent publications from our team:

  • Compressed sensing for fast quality assurance of hyperthermia applicators (IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference)
  • Evaluating MR thermometry performance during motion (International journal of hyperthermia)
  • Adapting temperature predictions to MR imaging in treatment position (International journal of hyperthermia)

Supporting the TANCA Clinical Trial

The phase I TANCA study aims to test the feasibility and safety of thermoradiotherapy for locally advanced head and neck cancer patients.

The first treatment in the TANCA-I dose-escalation trial at Erasmus MC, which integrates thermotherapy with radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, has been successfully conducted. The Hypercollar3D applicator is being used to sensitize cancer cells for ionizing radiation therapy using heating in the range of 40-44 degrees C, while leaving normal tissues unaffected. Maarten Paulides of EE (EM4Care+Cure lab) not only invented the system, but also actively contributed to the clinical study protocol. This innovative approach has the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment and improve patient outcomes.

The EM4Care+Cure lab is proud to support the TANCA trial at Erasmus MC, which is exploring how thermotherapy can be integrated with standard cancer treatments. Our work helps ensure accurate and safe heat delivery during therapy. More information on the TANCA research project:

These developments reflect the power of collaboration — between researchers, clinicians, and innovators — to bring new hope to people facing cancer.
