Third honorary doctorate for Bert Meijer
The University of Copenhagen honored university professor Bert Meijer with an honorary doctorate.
On Friday, November 14, University Professor Bert Meijer received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen. This was the third time Meijer had received this honorary title: the University of Mons (2017) and the Freie Universität Berlin (2019) had previously awarded him this distinction.
According to the , Meijer is a pioneer in the field of supramolecular chemistry. His research has led to the development of innovative materials with applications in sustainability, electronics, and medicine. He has been collaborating with researchers from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen for some time. “It is a great honor to receive this title from such a renowned university,” says Meijer. “With this honorary doctorate, the University of Copenhagen emphasizes that it considers supramolecular chemistry to be an important area of research,” he explains. There are no further obligations attached to the honorary doctorate.
Research areas
University Professor Meijer is affiliated with the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS), the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and the Department of Chemical Engineering & Chemistry at ϸ. He has built up an impressive body of work in the field of supramolecular polymer research. He also co-founded the ICMS and led the research institute for many years. Meijer is still very active in his field, both at ϸ and at other universities in the Netherlands and abroad.
Mentor and support
Although the title has been awarded to him personally, Meijer emphasizes that the honor belongs to the entire research group. I don't score myself. I consider it as my primary responsibility as a professor to mentor and support the young researchers in the group. They are the ones who achieve the many wonderful results. This award is therefore a token of appreciation for all (former) group members and colleagues. Hopefully, it will open doors for young researchers from the group to realize their ideal future within or outside of science.
Ceremony
Meijer was awarded the honorary doctorate during the Danish university's annual celebration. “The ceremony was a classy gathering in a beautiful old building in Copenhagen. The ceremony concluded with a concert, marking a great finale to the event.”
