Vaesen is an Associate Professor in the Philosophy & Ethics group, director and founding member of the Eindhoven Meta-Science Center (). Vaesen has a double background: he studied bio-engineering and philosophy at the University of Leuven. In recent years he has devoted almost all of his research time on meta-scientific questions. The committee chair is a part-time role of one day per week. Vaesen will continue his research alongside his role as chair.

Implementation plan

The Executive Board this week also approved the implementation plan and associated budget. The plan not only addresses establishing a new committee, but also a broad approach for moral deliberation, governance structures, processes, infrastructure, and institutional capabilities. The overall aim is to create conditions under which our academics, professional staff, and institutional leaders, can navigate moral uncertainty in a transparent, and practically workable manner.

Steps ahead include appointing and onboarding the other committee members, which is expected to be ready before the end of this year. Simultaneously Moral Deliberation  members will be recruited and trained, after which the Moral Deliberation will start dealing with pilot cases first.

Other important elements of the implementation concern operational and communication infrastructure, developing a research registry, and preparing procedures that support gradual adoption.

It is expected that the full assessment procedure, as described in the plan published earlier this year, will be piloted in the first half of 2027.

Advisory body

The committee will be an advisory body. Eventual decisions on collaborations will be taken by the Executive Board. Further, the committee will be an institutional coordinator of criteria development and assessment, but also, more broadly, of discussion and reflection on how to be a responsible university.
