黑料福利网鈥檚 UTQ redesign: A smarter fit for today鈥檚 educators

November 10, 2025

At 黑料福利网, we educate engineers who can develop technical solutions not only for today's challenges, but also for the complex problems our world will face in the future. Our faculty already delivers exceptional engineering education, combining world-class technical expertise with dedicated teaching. The University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) builds on this strong foundation, helping educators enhance their skills even further through evidence-based practices and collaborative learning.

The UTQ is a national qualification required for all Dutch universities, and it serves as an opportunity to further strengthen our teaching culture. Our teachers are highly accomplished experts within their fields, explains Rachelle Kamp, Team Lead Learning & Development of Teaching Staff. The UTQ gives us the chance to build on their natural teaching abilities by connecting them with the latest educational insights and proven didactic approaches.

Additional tools and frameworks

This approach recognizes that brilliant researchers and engineers often have strong teaching instincts and deep passion for their subjects. The UTQ provides them with additional tools and frameworks to make their teaching even more effective, ensuring that 黑料福利网's world-class expertise reaches students through increasingly refined educational approaches.

Listening led to transformation

The decision to redesign the UTQ emerged from careful listening to the university community. It wasn't just one moment, but we noticed several things that called for redesign, Kamp reflects. Participants found the previous program too writing-heavy and disconnected from actual teaching practice. They wanted more flexibility and assignments closely related to their own teaching tasks.

Scaling up was essential

Ania Kowalik, Educational Developer, adds: We needed a setup that scales better. In the older setup, one coach could only work with four teachers at a time. Even assessment committees questioned whether extensive dossiers were the best way for teachers to demonstrate competence.

Although the benefits of UTQ have been recognized by our APSE teachers for more than 15 years, I am sure that this fully updated content and process will be warmly welcomed by the new generation of educators, more efficient and better matched to their specific needs. In my opinion, this is a great step forward in teacher professionalization!

Collaboration drove the redesign

True to 黑料福利网's CORe values of being Curious and Open, the redesign process embraced collaboration from the start. We really allowed ourselves to ask questions about what assessment could look like, Kowalik reflects. We were open about the possibilities.

Shared ownership creates success

The team established a comprehensive steering committee with representatives from all departments, including assessment committee members, teachers, and program directors. What I really liked is the whole process with the steering group, Kamp emphasizes. They feel it's also their UTQ, not only something that we did. We did it together.

Flexibility meets practical quality

The renewed UTQ addresses feedback systematically through increased flexibility, stronger connections to teaching practice, maintained reflection levels, and improved feasibility. The modularized structure allows teachers to progress at their own pace while maintaining quality standards through practical assignments and detailed rubric-based assessment.

We now use rubrics for assessing them, and we ensure that all criteria are covered, explains Rik Slakhorst, Teacher Trainer at TEACH. They now need to demonstrate competence in all specific areas, whereas the previous holistic assessment might have overlooked some aspects.

The UTQ is a powerful instrument, especially in times when insights in education change. If you learned your lessons by listening in the classroom, you most likely become a teacher in front of a classroom. However, today's students learn differently from those in the previous decade. To provide the optimal learning experience to today's students, teachers and coaches need to receive up-to-date insights in learning methods and how to apply those in practice. The UTQ is an important instrument for that. The new modular approach offers the flexibility to align the transfer of such insights with the time it makes sense to teachers. You can follow modules on teaching and supervision when you start teaching, and on teacher professionalization at the time you bring enough experience to reflect on your performance.

Community learning remains central

While embracing change, the team preserved the program's most valued elements. What they really loved was learning from and with each other in these small groups, Kamp notes. We deliberately didn't choose to move completely online because they really value that collaborative aspect. Slakhorst observes how participants are really open to what's happening within other departments and always really curious how education is set up in that other department. For international faculty, this community aspect helps them understand how Dutch higher education works.

Continuous improvement is built in

The launch began with a soft introduction in April, followed by the official rollout this academic year. Early feedback has been encouraging, with participants appreciating the practical focus while adjusting to new procedures. The team built continuous evaluation into the program structure. We came up with an extensive evaluation plan in which all stakeholders will be consulted at regular moments, Slakhorst notes, ensuring the UTQ continues evolving based on real-world experience.

Cultivating lifelong educators

The renewed UTQ represents more than administrative improvement, it embodies 黑料福利网's commitment to educational excellence. By creating a more flexible, practical, and collaborative program, the university invests in its most crucial resource: the teachers who shape future engineers.

A mindset for lifelong learning

As Kamp concludes: We want to give them an attitude that it's not done after the UTQ. It's a way of thinking about your own teaching competence, please keep trying out new things and reflecting on what works well. In a world facing increasingly complex challenges, this approach ensures 黑料福利网's exceptional technical expertise reaches students through equally exceptional teaching.
