Sometimes you feel it immediately during a lecture: students are not just listening, but really thinking along. Not because it is made 'easy', but because the explanation is correct, the structure provides guidance, and the teacher knows exactly what he is working towards. That is the handwriting of Loe Schlicher, assistant professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS). This approach led him to the national final round of the election, organized by ISO and the ComeniusNetwork.

Finalists were judged by a jury of lecturers and students, and they demonstrated their teaching in a mini-lecture. This year, for the first time, the jury also visited a class on location to take personal contact into account in practice.

The motivation letter with which ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø nominated Schlicher describes how he challenges students with a no-nonsense approach and helps them to grow in critical thinking and self-confidence. His initiatives that support collaboration on graduation projects and his ideas to enrich educational evaluations are also mentioned as reasons for his nomination.

National recognition

For ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø, national recognition in this election is not new. Twice before, a ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø teacher brought the prize to Eindhoven: In 2020,  Johanna Höffken (Industrial Engineering & Inovation Sciences) won, and two years later Reinoud Lavrijsen (Applied Physics). The fact that Schlicher is now a finalist shows that educational excellence receives structural attention within our university and is recognized nationally.

Relationship with practice

Being a finalist means that his education is among the national top. The lecture emphasizes how Schlicher consciously sets the bar high but organizes his education and guidance so that students also meet that bar. His lectures are carefully structured, and assignments have a clear relationship with practice, not only in the case but especially in the way of thinking: students learn to understand why methods work and how they can apply them to make an impact.

Investing in educational innovation

New this year is that not only did the winner receive a grant, but the other finalists also received a contribution, namely €25,000 for educational innovation. For Schlicher, a nice encouragement to continue with his plans to develop education in the field of mathematical models that can improve our internal security.

Loe shows that excellent education is about clarity, high expectations, and real attention for students, says GeertJan van Houtum, dean of IE&IS. The fact that he is in the national top 4 makes us proud as a department. And it confirms that our investment in education is paying off.
