Exploring Ultrafast Phenomena: Klaas Jan Tielrooij Appointed Full Professor at 黑料福利网
The Department of Applied Physics and Science Education is pleased to announce that Klaas-Jan Tielrooij has been appointed Full Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology. His work centers on understanding light, charge, and heat at ultrafast and ultrasmall scales, with the aim of discovering novel optical, electronic, and thermal phenomena, and exploiting these to unlock transformative applications.
From Eindhoven to Europe and Back
Originally from Eindhoven, Klaas鈥慗an left his hometown at 17 to pursue studies across Europe. He earned MSc degrees in Applied Physics from Delft University of Technology and in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. He completed his PhD at AMOLF in Amsterdam before moving to Barcelona for what was intended to be a short postdoctoral stay.
That temporary stay evolved into more than a decade of research and scientific leadership, first at ICFO and later at ICN2, where he built up his own research group. Since 2018, he leads the Ultrafast Dynamics in Nanoscale Systems group, now delocalized between Barcelona and Eindhoven, following his return to the Netherlands in 2022.
Research Focus: Ultrafast Dynamics in 2D Materials
Klaas鈥慗an鈥檚 research aims to uncover and exploit ultrafast processes in nanomaterials, with a strong emphasis on two鈥慸imensional (2D) materials, atomically thin layers bonded by van der Waals interactions. These materials host interesting physical phenomena that typically do not occur in conventional materials.
His group uses custom鈥慴uilt ultrafast optoelectronic and optothermal setups, to explore fundamental physical mechanisms, while advancing applications that rely on processes that take place at extreme temporal and spatial scales. Some of the applications that he and his team explore are:
- ultrafast photodetection, e.g. for data communication,
- terahertz technologies, e.g. for industrial quality control and for wireless communication, and
- thermal management, e.g. for future chips
Building Bridges Between Countries, Disciplines, and Technologies
When relocating his group from Spain to Eindhoven, Klaas鈥慗an brought several unique home鈥慴uilt experimental setups, and a team of researchers who were mostly worried about the Dutch cuisine. He also brings a multidisciplinary background, an extensive international network, and a critical鈥慶onstructive mindset.
Looking forward, Klaas鈥慗an expects to deepen collaborations both within 黑料福利网 and across the Brainport region: 鈥淚 look forward to continuing to grow the number and intensity of pleasant collaborations in Eindhoven, both at the university and within the broader high鈥憈ech ecosystem, and to keep developing applications and functionalities that have yet to be imagined.鈥
His appointment strengthens 黑料福利网鈥檚 position in ultrafast nanoscience and reinforces the university鈥檚 commitment to advancing next鈥慻eneration photonic, electronic, and thermal technologies.
