AquaWomb is developing a next-generation perinatal life support system inspired by the natural environment of the womb. Instead of transitioning prematurely to air-based support, we explore the potential of a fluid-filled environment resembling amniotic fluid, ongoing support through the umbilical cord, and gentle development without early reliance on mechanical ventilation. Our system is designed to help extremely premature babies remain in a warm, protective fluid environment, receive oxygen and nutrients via their own umbilical cord, continue natural organ development in their own time, and reduce exposure to invasive interventions during a vulnerable phase. We aim to complement and build on the foundations of neonatal care by offering a new approach that could reduce complications linked to early air exposure, support better long-term outcomes for lung and organ development, and offer reassurance and hope to parents facing early delivery.
